Florence & The Machine – Ceremonials – Review

Florence and the Machine have returned with a new album ‘Ceremonials’ which is a follow up to their critically acclaimed debut ‘Lungs’. I have to admit that Florence and the Machine aren’t in my regular musical rotation but I definitely enjoyed the better parts of ‘Lungs’ of which their were many, ‘Ceremonials’ probably won’t hijack the radio airwaves as much as the much more radio friendly predecessor but that isn’t a bad thing when the musical prowess is this high.

‘Ceremonials’ has a more darker feel to it than the more upbeat ‘Lungs’ which is made almost immediately known with opening track ‘Only If For A Night’ which starts with some harp plucking and piano chords before Florence begins to sing and the drums come in and the song takes a slow methodical much more forward thinking and contemplated path to make the song sound as big as possible which sets the theme for the album nicely. Up next is lead single ‘Shake It Out’ which is the stand out track on the album it is truly stunning and without any doubt what so ever the best pop song that 2011 will have to offer from anyone. It’s hard to believe that anyone could make a track so joyous and upbeat with life literally bursting from its seams, yet Florence manages this in a song that even the word epic doesn’t seem to do justice to. Up next is ‘What The Water Gave Me’ which is the first song I heard from the album back in August when I posted it on this blog, I remember being particularly impressed back then which made me all the more interested in the release of the album, its this song that probably showcases Florence’s vocal range the most and is arguably along with ‘Never Let Go’ the most focused tune on the album as well. Despite the album being consistently great through out its 12 songs it is this first half of the album that is the apex.

If ‘Lungs’ put Florence Welch on the map as a female artist ‘Ceremonials’ has cemented her place at the top of the pile by a country mile, its not just the quality of the music on show it’s the sheer consistency as well. I think it is safe to say that this album will probably find itself in more regular rotation in my music collection than ‘Lungs’ as ‘Ceremonials’ is a complete album and not just a collection of songs where you only pick the best to listen to which I found myself doing with ‘Lungs’.
